2019-10-01 20:42

Honorable Prime Minister Charlot Salwai,

Honorable Deputy Prime Minister Jotham Napat,

Honorable ministers, members of parliament, heads of diplomatic missions,

Representatives of the Chinese community,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Dear friends,

Welcome to the Chinese Embassy. It is a great pleasure to have you with us tonight to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

On October 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong solemnly announced to the world the founding of the People's Republic of China on Tian'anmen Rostrum. Over the past 70 years, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese nation has achieved a tremendous transformation-it has stood up, grown rich and become strong.

The past 70 years have witnessed countless Chinese miracles. In 1949, China's GDP was less than 30 billion USD. In 2018, the figure exceeded 13.6 trillion USD, an increase of over 450 times. As the second largest economy and the No. 1 goods trading nation with the biggest stockpile of foreign exchange reserves, China is now growing to be the largest consumer market. For many years, China has contributed over 30% of global growth. It has been a key driver and anchor for the world economy.

Over the past seven decades, China has always prioritized the people's interests by ensuring and improving people's livelihoods through development. More than 700 million people have been lifted out of poverty. China's middle-income population stands at 400 million, the largest in the world. The average life expectancy in China has gone up from 35 to 77. China has built a basic health insurance system covering 1.3 billion people. Chinese people now have a strong sense of achievement and happiness. These miracles prove that China has chosen a right path for development and China's political, economic and social systems are successful. Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, Chinese people will continue strengthening solidarity to advance the socialism with Chinese characteristics and work hard to make the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation into reality.

     Ladies and Gentlemen:

The past seventy years have seen China firmly upholding peaceful development, sticking to an independent foreign policy and safeguarding national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. China has all along resolutely opposed hegemony, power politics and colonialism, and safeguard world and regional peace. China has devoted itself to forging a new form of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice, and win-win cooperation. We stand ready to work with all the other countries to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

Now China is more integrated into the world. As the biggest developing country, China attaches great importance to the issue of climate change and has been actively engaged in and contributed to the global campaign on climate change. Guided by a green growth concept, China strictly follows a path of green, low-carbon and sustainable development. Since 2010, China has invested 75.8 million USD in renewable energy, far more than any other country and exceeding the investment of No.2 to No.4 countries combined. In 2018, China's CO2 emissions per unit of GDP dropped by 45.8 percent from the level of 2005, or a reduction of around 5.3 billion tons of CO2 emissions. Since 2000, China's increased forest stock has accounted for 25 percent of the global total. China keeps its commitment to jointly building a green Belt and Road. We are actively implementing the Belt and Road South-South Cooperation Initiative on climate change, contributing Chinese wisdom and strength to the global fight in this regard.

     Ladies and Gentlemen:

Since the establishment of diplomatic relationship between China and Vanuatu in 1982, we have always regarded each other as true friends and best partners. Under the guidance of the leaders of both countries, China and Vanuatu trust and support each other, achieving fruitful outcomes in practical cooperation of various fields. Vanuatu always upholds the one China policy and firmly supports China on the Taiwan issue and other issues involving China's core interests and major concerns. As one of the first countries supporting Vanuatu's fight for independence, China has done its best to help with Vanuatu's economic and social development within its means. In May, Prime Minister Salwai made an official visit to China and held successful meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang, reaching a series of important consensus and opening a new chapter for the China-Vanuatu partnership. Vanuatu is actively engaged in the Belt and Road Initiative, which has laid a solid foundation for further improving connectivity and pragmatic cooperation between our two countries. Now the China-Vanuatu relationship has entered a new era featuring win-win cooperation and common development.

----China wishes to join hands with Vanuatu to usher a new horizon for the Maritime Silk Road by maintaining the momentum of high level exchanges, increasing mutual political trust, promoting policy and strategy synergy and sharing governance experience.

----China firmly supports Vanuatu's endeavors to explore a development path suitable to its national conditions. Focusing on economic and social benefits and sustainable development, China will continue supporting Vanuatu's efforts to develop national economy and improve people's living standards.

----China stands ready to increase cultural and people-to-people exchanges with Vanuatu and help with capacity building of the country. We look forward to broadening exchanges between local governments, youth, women, media, universities and all other circles so that our friendship will span generations.

----China is willing to work with Vanuatu to strengthen coordination in international affairs and promote the implementation of UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. China supports Pacific island countries, including Vanuatu to strengthen the "voice of Pacific" and wishes to work together in combating climate change within the framework of Belt and Road South-South Cooperation in order to build a clean and beautiful world.

     Ladies and Gentlemen:

China-Vanuatu friendship and cooperation have embarked on a new journey. Let's work hand-in-hand and tap into our advantages to take the China-Vanuatu Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to a new height.

Now may I invite you to join me in a toast:

To the prosperity of China and Vanuatu,

To the everlasting friendship between our two countries,

To the health of everyone present tonight,
