2013-11-09 13:25

His Excellency Vice Primer of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yang

His Excellency Minister of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, Gao Hucheng

His Excellency the Governor of Guangdong Province,

Leaders of the Pacific Island Nations,

Private Sector Representatives of the People's Republic of China,

Excellencies,

Ladies and gentlemen,

The Government and the people of the Republic of Vanuatu are deeply honoured and greatly proud to be represented at this second China-Pacific Islands Economic Forum at Guangzhou in the Province of Guangdong.

My delegation brings warm greetings from the Government and people of the Republic of Vanuatu to you and the people of Guangdong Province and people of the People's Republic of China. We thank you for the great hospitality that you have extended to me and my delegation in Guangdong Province and your beautiful city of Guangzhou since our arrival.

It is indeed a great honour to address you all today at this important gathering as we come together to discuss ways to drive the economic links between China and our countries and how our nations can engage constructively to adapt to the increasing challenging environment in the region and around the world.

This is my second visit this year to the People's Republic of China as Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu. My first visit was in September this year to attend the China-Arab States Exposition in the Yinchuan City within the Ningxia Province.

Your Excellency, the People's Republic of China is recognized as a very important and genuine partner both bilaterally and multilaterally within the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Diplomatic relations with the Republic of Vanuatu established 33 years ago have generated increasingly positive and closer relations in terms of cultural exchange, economic cooperation in various sectors, including Education, Health, Agriculture, Fisheries, Tourism, Economic Infrastructure and others, investment in Vanuatu priority programs, closer and more regular dialogue on regional and international issues. We wish to thank you for your humble gesture in listening and understanding our circumstances and provide your valuable help where it is needed most. Vanuatu will always treasure the good working relations with the People's Republic of China and is committed to advancing the relations further in areas of common interest.

Please allow me to take you back to 2006 during which the first Forum was held and when China took a significant step in strengthening its relations with our countries in areas of common interest with the signing of the framework of cooperation to enrich our cooperation. We have achieved many key goals under the cooperation and we have maintained our commitment to further enhance our achievements, including those priority areas of development. I heartily thanks the Government of the People's Republic of China for its generosity in its assistance and support to the Pacific Islands.

We are confident that this Forum will provide a great opportunity to review the existing cooperation programs, consider pragmatic options of expanding our cooperation programs and establish direct and open dialogue with the Guangdong Province and potential Chinese companies for more prosperous future economic cooperation, wider trade links and effective investment in Vanuatu national priority projects.

My Government is very conscious of the increasing international challenges such as the threatening negative impacts of climate change to our vulnerable island economies and societies. While we acknowledge the international recognition of such threats, concrete actions and pragmatic solutions need to be undertaken without further delay. There is no doubt that the People's Republic of China will play a leading role in this regard.

We remain firmly committed to uphold the fundamental principles and values binding our friendly and cooperative bilateral relations and our effective regional solidarity we have shared throughout past decades.

We look forward to a successful outcome of this Forum that will pave the way for new directions for greater cooperation between the People's Republic of China and my Government and the people of the Republic of Vanuatu.

We acknowledge again with great appreciation the positive support of the Government of the People's Republic of China and, in particular, the Province and the people of Guangdong Province for facilitating and welcoming our participation at this important Forum.

Thank you for your attention – merci beaucoup.
